How SAURO improves reliability and assembly stability

In the PCB connector and terminal block industry, even a small design detail can make a significant difference in terms of reliability, safety and ease of assembly. For this reason SAURO develops customized solutions on the plastic housings of its products, designed to meet specific application requirements and improve performance during assembly and final use. Thanks to the flexibility of its equipment and molds, combined with a strong customer-oriented approach, targeted customizations can be developed while maintaining high quality standards.

Polarization of PCB-Mount Products

One of the most requested customizations concerns the polarization of PCB-mount products through one or more small pegs. This design solution has a dual purpose: preventing assembly errors and improving product stability on the PCB. The polarization small pegs are protrusions integrated directly into the lower surface of the plastic housing of the connector or terminal block. They can have different shapes, generally cylindrical or rectangular, and are designed according to the specific application requirements.

Preventing Assembly Errors

During PCB assembly, whether manual or automated, correct component positioning is essential to ensure reliability and electrical continuity. The small peg, or multiple small pegs, acts as a guide, allowing the product to be inserted in the correct position and preventing orientation errors, misalignment or incorrect assembly. This solution is particularly useful in high-speed production processes or in applications where multiple similar components are installed on the same PCB.

Improved Mechanical Stability on the PCB

In addition to their guiding function, the small pegs contribute to the mechanical anchoring of the component on the PCB, increasing stability during cable tightening operations and improving resistance to vibrations and mechanical stress.

In SMD products, the small pegs also play an important role during the reflow soldering process. The hot air flows required for uniform heating may cause component displacement: the peg reduces this risk, improving stability during the production process.

A concrete example is represented by SAURO’s 2-pole MTB terminal block. In this case, the addition of the polarization peg was introduced to solve a product rotation issue occurring during cable tightening operations. Thanks to the peg, the terminal block achieved more stable anchoring on the PCB, improving assembly precision and connection reliability. This design modification also contributed to obtaining the VDE certification for the product, confirming the effectiveness of the developed solution.

Tailor-Made Customization

The position and geometry of the pegs can be fully customized according to the customer’s application requirements, allowing optimized solutions to be developed for every specific project.

With SAURO, every design detail becomes a concrete opportunity to improve the quality, safety and reliability of the final system.
